In 1958, Veeraindar Goli's family lived in Delhi and his father bought a 1948 Austin A40, a British car that was popular in India. Mr. Goli grew up with the car, which survived the India-Pakistan War of 1965, and his father taught him and his siblings to drive in it. ⠀

The family sold the car in the mid-1970s before beginning to emigrate to the U.S., eventually settling in Raleigh, N.C., where Mr. Goli's parents lived just down the street from his own family.⠀

A few years ago, he had the idea to buy an Austin for his father's 90th birthday. It took him three years of searching in the U.S., Australia and India before he ultimately found a 1950 A40 in the U.K. He purchased it for $5,000, and it arrived in April—via a cargo ship named Delhi Highway.⠀

Mr. Goli, 64, a physician and professor emeritus at Duke University School of Medicine, presented the car to his parents this spring. It was virtually identical to their 1948 Austin, and his mother could not stop laughing because so many stories came to mind.⠀

Mr. Goli is still restoring the Austin, which he said not only brings his family happy memories, but is an important symbol of their heritage.⠀
