The first female driver for Uber's Middle East rival is helping to set a new course for women integrating into Saudi Arabia's workforce now that they are allowed to take the wheel.⠀

Ammal Farhat, 45, is among more than 2,000 women who applied to drive for the popular ride-hailing app @careemksa, after the Saudi government last year announced the lifting of its female driving ban as part of major social and economic overhauls.⠀

"So far, I've only had positive experiences," she said.
Many Saudis, especially young people, have welcomed those changes—led by the country's 32-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman—but they have also drawn criticism from conservatives and an older generation.

The Wall Street Journal caught a ride with Ms. Farhat in the city of Jeddah to find out what passengers think of the changes.⠀
