The story behind this highlight begins with the samurai Endo Morito, who lusted after the beautiful wife of another samurai. She, however, was faithful and tricked her suitor into killing her, in order to save her honour.

Realising he had slain his beloved, Endo Morito repented his sins and became the monk known as Mongaku Shonin. He is shown here suffering his 37-day penance under the freezing Nachi waterfall.
