Richard Bergh was a pivotal figure in the development of Swedish art at the turn of the 20th century. As the Director of the National Gallery of Sweden, he championed a new art: a nationally orientated Symbolism.

Bergh's monumental canvas – a highlight of our Classic Week auctions – is one of the largest known Nordic landscapes by a Scandinavian artist. The landscape depicted is in Jotunheim, at the heart of a long range known as the Scandinavian Mountains.
