Meet Mack, a #Labrador retriever with a day job. Last fall and winter, he inspected about 1,700 honeybee colonies in Maryland. Mack is searching for American foulbrood, bacteria that are harmless to humans but can spread quickly from hive to hive, decimating #bee populations. Honeybees are a vital, invisible work force in the food industry, pollinating about a third of the nation’s crops. Cybil Preston, the chief apiary inspector for @mdagdept, makes sure that each beehive crossing the state line is free of the bacteria. 4 years ago, Cybil trained a dog to help her find foulbrood. Unlike human inspectors, #dogs don’t need to open hives to check them. They can simply sniff a comb and tell if the bacteria have killed off any larvae. 4 people working full time cover less than half of what Mack can. “If I didn’t have dogs, these bees just wouldn’t be able to move,” Cybil said. She recently received a grant through the federal farm bill to expand her canine detection program, which could serve as a model for other states. “All beekeepers are having trouble keeping their bees alive,” Cybil said. “If they’re putting the effort in, I want to put the effort in.” @amangumphoto took this photo of Mack taking a break after training.
