Happy July 1st & happy first day of #plasticfreejuly ? Throughout the month of July I’m going to be taking the #plasticfreejuly challenge and I would LOVE for you to join me ?? Why am I taking it? Because I love the ocean, I love nature and I love wildlife. Sadly these three things are all under threat due to our huge global issue of marine plastic pollution. We are addicted to plastic, producing over 300 millions tonnes of the stuff every year from non renewable resources (oil & gas). We use plastic for minutes or seconds and then throw it “away”, but away doesn’t exist. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade it just breaks down over hundreds of years into plastic “dust”. Practically every piece of plastic we have ever produced still exists in some form. We are then dumping anywhere from 8-14 million tonnes of plastic into our ocean every year, which is over a truckload a minute. Due to this, along with over fishing, are set to have more plastic in the ocean then fish by 2050. This threatens wildlife, killing whales, dolphins, turtles and seabirds to name a few. The situation is pretty dire BUT we can take action! ? For #plasticfreejuly I will be avoiding ANY single use plastic - plastic you use once and throw away e.g. water bottles, coffee cups, plastic cutlery, food packaging, etc. (Did you know it takes 6x the amount of water contained in a plastic water bottle to produce the bottle itself?) ? I will also be doing my very best to avoid plastic in all areas of my life for the whole month of July. It’s going to be tough, really tough. But I’m up for the challenge! ?? Want to join me?
