The killings of five people during what authorities called a "targeted attack" on a Maryland newspaper on June 28 has reverberated in media circles across the country, at a time when verbal and online attacks on so-called "fake news" organizations from politicians and President Donald Trump have become routine. Police in Annapolis, the state capital, said the gunman "looked for his victims" during the assault on the Capital Gazette offices before being apprehended and taken into custody. The five fatalities were identified as Rob Hiaasen, 59, an editor and columnist; Wendi Winters, 65, a local news #reporter and community columnist; John McNamara, 56, an editor and sports reporter; Gerald Fischman, 61, the editorial page editor; and sales assistant Rebecca Smith, 34. The county's police chief said two others received superficial wounds. The suspect, identified by the Associated Press as Jarrod W. Ramos, a man said to have had a past vendetta against the paper, was charged with five counts of first-degree murder. In the hours after the shooting, #CapitalGazette reporters remained defiant in continuing their coverage. "I can tell you this:" reporter Chase Cook wrote on Twitter, "We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow." And they did: "5 shot dead at The Capital," read the headline. During a 90-minute vigil on June 29, the @baltimoresun reports, Capital Gazette reporter Pat Furgurson told the crowd: “We are not the enemy.
