A few days before the June 24 lifting of a longstanding ban against women drivers, Jaguar/Land Rover Saudi Arabia invited the international media to an event in which the country’s only female race car driver, @aseel.alhamad, would take her maiden lap on her native soil at a track near Riyadh. Though born in #SaudiArabia, all of her training and races have taken place on courses elsewhere. The 34-year-old came to motorsports late because she never had any opportunities to train at home, reports TIME’s @arynebaker. As she waited for her car to be prepared, she looked wistfully at a @F1 vehicle parked nearby. “That was always my dream,” she said. But making it to the top echelons of racing would have required starting early and training hard—both impossible for a young woman in Saudi Arabia until just a few days ago. When Al Hamad exited the track a few laps later, tears were streaming down her face. “Its very emotional to be here,” she said. “The only thing that will make me happier than the day women can drive, is the day I see a young woman racing Formula 1 cars on Saudi soil.” Photographs by @ayeshamalikphoto for TIME
