Photo by @nickcobbing These small pieces of freshwater ice would have likely calved from the glacier in the background. The tide delivers them onto the beach and the warm summer air gets to work with the melt process. On the way they make shapes for us to marvel at as we walk the waterline. The picture was made near the end of our trip around Spitsbergen onboard the NG Explorer with @natgeoexpeditions just a few weeks ago.

The Svalbard coastline isn’t as epic as Greenland’s -the glaciers are less steep and expansive, but the terrain can be more subtle; on closer look a range of landscapes appear: tundra, scree and the deep greens of the mosses and lichens in summer.
