Battery Park City’s annual celebration in New York City is the largest Midsummer Festival in the world outside of Sweden. The Swedish holiday welcomes summer and the season of fertility. Traditionally people make flower wreaths to greet the incoming season, in the belief that they garner nature’s supernatural power. “What is special about midsummer is the atmosphere, crowds, and the folk music,” said Leif Pagrotsky, the consul general of Sweden in New York. Midsummer Eve is celebrated around solstice in June, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is believed to be a magical night. It’s one of the most important days of the year for Swedes, rooted in a pagan tradition dating back to the 1500s. @malinfezehai took these photos of festival-goers and swipe left to see Leif.
