For the first time, a woman will be part of the winning crew at the @VolvoOceanRace, a round-the-world #sailing event that began in 1973. Though the final standings are yet to be determined, all 7 teams, including the 3 battling for overall victory, will have at least 2 women aboard in the final leg of the race. That’s a change from the past, when women were often consigned to all-female crews or did not sail at all. The increase in female sailors is due to a recent rule change that incentivizes gender balance. Teams that remained all male were allowed to use only 7 sailors. Teams that added women were allowed to use more. While the new rule has created more opportunity for women competitors, some participants fear the progress will only be temporary if it isn't enforced next season. The new owners of the race are considering a switch to more extreme yachts, which would require smaller crews, probably no more than 5 sailors. That could mean prioritizing men again. “We just need to keep this momentum going,” said Abby Ehler, a sailor in the race. “We need to get to the point where we are being selected for our skill set and not on a gender basis.” @maudbe took this photo of Annemieke Bes, another competitor in the race, shortly after her team docked in Cardiff, Wales, last month.
