It’s June in St. Petersburg, which means that the sun doesn’t dip behind the Baltic Sea until around midnight. The nearly uninterrupted light so far north acts as a kind of human power plant, continuously fueling millions of bodies but preventing them from getting the signals they need to begin to fall asleep. The body operates on a 24-hour clock, and the ability to set and reset that clock depends on a light-dark cycle. Remove darkness from that cycle and human clocks, sleep and athletic performance can be thrown out of whack. For visitors and residents in St. Petersburg, that means it’s easy to wander the city through the small hours of what usually looks like night. These so-called White Nights make the city a captivating place to be during the #WorldCup. It’s the northernmost location for World Cup competition since 1958, when 2 matches took place in Sandviken, Sweden. But for players, the latitude a bit of a problem. The tension of the competition robs them of rest. Factor in the almost never-ending light and the result is an under-rested team. @mjrhill took this photo at 11:54 p.m. one recent evening in St. Petersberg.
