#MovementMondays Lindsay Mendez is an American actress and singer of Mexican & Russian Jewish descent. An extremely talented Broadway performer, Mendez is known for her work in shows like Wicked as the 10th Anniversary Elphaba, Godspell, and Grease. She just won her first Tony Award in the “Best Featured Actress in a Musical” category for her role as Carrie Pipperidge in the 2018 revival of Carousel, which means she has joined a small circle of Latina Tony winners including Rita Moreno, Chita Rivera, Priscilla Lopez, Sara Ramirez, and Karen Olivo. Her beautifully inspirational acceptance speech exclaimed, “When I moved to New York, I was told to change my last name from Mendez to Matthews or I wouldn’t work. And I just want to say how proud I am to be a part of a community that celebrates diversity and individuality. To all of you artists out there just be your true self and the world will take note.” Congrats Lindsay – you are an amazing role model for the Latinx community!
