Lynn Chadwick began his career as an architectural draughtsman. The technicality and precision of his first trade is clear in this exquisite study for one of his 1950s ‘Watcher’ sculptures.

Chadwick’s ‘Watcher’ figures are observant and immobile figures, typical of his work from this period. This drawing demonstrates a similar aesthetic, but the bright colour palette establishes a more playful and spirited character.
