cheers to a season of dinner parties in the garden - the sort which kick off in the late lazy afternoon with a glass of something cool and last long into the evening under a twinkling string of lights and the clinking of glasses amid the chatter of friends and family .
.
we had our first party in the garden at the city cottage last weekend, the first ever in two years of owning the house!! complete with strings of lights, mismatched chairs and plastic folding tables hidden beneath airy linen cloths .
.
At one point I looked out from the kitchen at our merry band around the table and realized that my truest idea of happiness was playing out before me, smiled to myself and pulled the ice cream from the freezer .
.
But in truth, I have previously shunned using this space in favor of the idyllic settings at the farm, perfect grass, white clapboards, flower-filled gardens - not having the ability to see past the imperfections of the still in progress city cottage - brown shingled, asphalt covered garden not a lick of grass to be found - but last weekend made me realize that the true delight of entering isn’t the perfection of it all but the simple act of gathering itself - of sharing food and chatter and the luxury of that time, those moments, together .

so a little reminder to myself to embrace imperfections and be open to the possibility of finding and creating magic in unlikely spaces (though I will admit a string of garden lights does go a long way!)
