We arrived in the Black Canyon late Friday night, the 5hr drive turned 6 after holiday traffic. Saturday morning found us nearly giving up after epic’ing at the rappels. @james_lucas, more bouldering focused these days, didn’t need to use his words. The way he punched and kicked at the haul bag on the way down said it all.

Five hours of toiling later, we got to the bivy ledge and ditched the heavy pig ?? We would try just the upper half of our objective, Tague Your Time. I set off on the first 5.12 corner nervous and mentally drained. After fumbling at the cruxes and dropping a couple nuts, I yelled “Take!!” out of fear. I leaned my head against the small stopper I was weighting and teared up. I was supposed to be brave, confident. I couldn’t imagine being either. A few minutes of self-pity passed. “Climbing,” I said to James. I took deep breaths and let my body do what it knew.

James nearly flashed the pitch on TR, falling just shy of the belay on the last traverse. His grin betrayed his glower from earlier. “The climbing is so good!” he said. I couldn’t help but smile in return. Whatever we were ‘supposed’ to be; a boulderer, a trad climber, brave, bold, confident - didn’t matter. In order to be any of those things, we had to simply ‘be’, and learn from the experience of being.

After topping out Sunday afternoon, in better spirits than when we descended, we did learn something we were supposed to be doing - or not doing ? The entire South Rim had closed to climbing a few days earlier due to loose rock. We missed the notice on the permit box and could have been fined $100. Cheers to the ranger for the warning ticket instead ?? We certainly learned from that as well ?
