#SpeakingInDance | “You have to make sure you breathe,” said Shetaya Pringle, a 14-year-old member of the BAM/Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble. “If you don’t, your energy is going to be low. You have to put in your all.” And that’s just the dancing; members of the ensemble also worked with Kwesi Nkroma to master their percussion skills. “I really wanted a drum piece for them, because they’re so used to dancing,” said the dance director, Karen Thornton. “Most drummers dance, and dancers should know how to play.” The delightful, vibrant ensemble will take center stage at the annual #DanceAfrica festival, beginning Friday at @bam_brooklyn. (The dancers will also perform at the @cacbedstuy 2018 Youth Arts Academy Annual Concert, June 6-9.) Karen’s own journey with DanceAfrica began in 1977, when #ChuckDavis, her mentor, created the festival.
