Philip Roth, the prolific, protean, and often blackly comic novelist who was a pre-eminent figure in 20th-century literature, died last night at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 85. Philip, more than just about any other writer of his time, was tireless in his exploration of male sexuality. He was drawn to write about themes of Jewish identity, anti-Semitism and the Jewish experience in America. In 2005 he became only the 3rd living writer (after Saul Bellow and Eudora Welty) to have his books enshrined in the @libraryofamerica. And in his 60s, when many writers start winding down, he produced an exceptional sequence of historical novels — “American Pastoral,” “The Human Stain” and “I Married a Communist.” Philip was known for putting in endless days at his stand-up desk, throwing out more pages than he kept. In a 2018 interview with @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, he said he was worn out. “I was by this time no longer in possession of the mental vitality or the physical fitness needed to mount and sustain a large creative attack of any duration.” He settled into the contented life of an Upper West Side retiree, seeing friends and going to concerts. @philipmontgomery took this photo of #PhilipRoth at his home in Manhattan earlier this year.
