Purple Rain was released June 25th 1984. I was a kid but I remember watching it in the living room with my mom and dad on the tv. This was a pivotal time for me this movie made me love music. I watched it and turned to my mom and said “when I grow up I want to be Apollonia” not like her I wanted to BE her. It was the first time I saw a woman naked on TV and her curves, her hair, her mannerisms, her drive was goals for me. I loved how independent she was, she went after her dreams and she fought for herself. As an impressionable child I took a lot away from that movie. Turning tragedy into a gift, not letting your circumstances define you and the power to rise above. That movie changed me in a lot of ways it gave me vision and that vision was better than the one I was living. When I turned 10 I saved and stole enough money to buy the soundtrack on tape. I played it till it broke. As an adult I’ve seen the movie over 100 times. When Prince passes I cried like knew him. It was a sad day for me. When my mom passed I played “Nothing compares to you” at her funeral. To this day I can’t play that song without crying. When my mom passes all her flowers in her garden that she loved so much died. It was strange too.
