On a very chilly & windy late autumn morning, Siam and Echo are enjoying the weak rays of sunlight and a good romp in the grass, saturated with cat nip. Cat nip (Nepeta cataria) is an ornamental plant found throughout Europe, Middle East, parts of Asia and China and is grown ornamentally but also for its attractant qualities to domestic cats and butterflies. It also has an effect on lions and leopards whereby the chemical nepetalactone acts on the olfactory epithelium binding to receptors and giving the animal a ‘high’ which can last from between 5-15 minutes. Not all cats react to it and apparently the ability to detect nepetalactone is hereditary. Who would’ve known!
