“Being yourself, you’re going to stand out — you actually cannot help but stand out.” Last night, @elainewelteroth joined @nytgender editor @jessicabennett for the latest edition of #GetWithTheTimes, our live conversation series for college students. “Your unique perspective that no one else can bring should hopefully help empower you to be your full self,” said the 31-year-old, who is the former editor in chief of @Teen Vogue. Elaine was the youngest person and the 2nd African-American to hold an editor in chief title at Condé Nast in its nearly 110-year history. Earlier in her career, she said, she tried to conform for the sake of credibility. “I don’t think that I actually reached my potential until I shed that weight,” she said. Right now, she added, there’s an opening right now for young people to speak up — specially those who are marginalized. “If I could choose any time to be young and alive, it would be now,” she told the crowd. “This is your moment.” @mikecohenphotography took this portrait of #ElaineWelteroth.
