In her project “The Wall,” the photographer @mojganghanbari_ sought to start a dialogue between Iranian mothers and daughters. Here, she photographed 7-year-old Kimia outside the family home in #Tehran. Swipe left to see a portrait of Kimia with her #mother, Afsaneh, 29, who comes from a traditional family. “I didn’t go to university and married at the age of 19, when I didn’t know much about a love relationship,” she told the photographer. “My mom taught me that modesty for a girl is not talking with guys in the street and never dating one.” If a man were interested in her, she was told, he’d propose — with the permission of both families. She said she doesn’t want the same thing to happen to her daughter. | Many Iranian women today don’t relate to some of their mothers’ experiences growing up before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which reversed decades’ worth of progress toward gender equality. “The Wall” explores a generational tension as it aims to answer 2 vital questions: “How does this gap influence our relationship with our mothers as the first feminine figures we see in life?” And: “How could we communicate better with each other?” Visit the link in our profile to read the full story on the #NYTLensBlog.
