Roya, 25, with her mother, Azam, in Karaj, #Iran. “There are stories of my craziness with my friends that I don’t tell mom — not to hide anything, just because I don’t want to be judged or make her worried,” Roya told the photographer @mojganghanbari_. When Azam was her daughter’s age, she was already married. “The way our parents raised girls didn’t give us courage to speak up for ourselves and express our disagreements out loud,” Azam told @mojganghanbari_. Unlike today’s generation, she said, she was afraid to say no to her father and brothers, the rulers of the household. In her project “The Wall,” @mojganghanbari_ sought to start a dialogue between Iranian #mothers and daughters. She says that young women today are more educated and seek more opportunities than their mothers could have. But the changes in Iran have also created barriers between the generations. She has seen many young Iranian women keeping things from their mothers — not out of fear of retribution, but out of fear of misunderstanding or judgment. “I wanted to talk about generations but in an intimate, poetic way,” she said, emphasizing that she aimed to highlight underlying similarities across cultures rather than apparent differences.
