Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Grizzly bear fishing – It would be nice if I could fully articulate what it feels like to be lying on the ground, camera at water level whilst an adult female grizzly bear comes pounding towards me through the estuary shallows but unfortunately that task is beyond me. Though the camera, and the technicalities of composition, exposure and focussing provide something of a disconnect it is still a mesmerising experience, one that burns itself into the memory leaving an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I was able to experience such a privilege. Photographically speaking looking at the image now I might have preferred for the bear not be intersected by a milky white sky but paramount to me was the intimacy of the perspective, the sense of looking up at the bear as it sprinted in our direction, hence the choice to shoot at water level. The benefits of modern post processing have of course allowed me to retain detail in the sky whilst simultaneously lifting the shadows of the bears’ dark underbelly but, out-with using flash to photograph the bear this was the only option to balance the significant contrast in required exposure. No matter how spectacular or privileged the encounter there are often compromises, decisions that we are forced to make in an instant and all that we can ever do is our best. In this situation I shot to retain as much detail in the sky as possible whilst giving the bear the maximum amount of exposure that I possibly could. I did after all travel there to photograph bears and not the sky! If experiencing a sight such as this is on your bucket list then check out the link in my bio as we’ve had a couple of last minute cancellations to a photo tour that I’m leading for @tatraphotography. It’s a proper trip-of-a-lifetime to the Kamchatka peninsula in Eastern Russia and sights like this is what we’re going there for!
