Photos by @melissafarlow // The Kentucky Derby has always been part of my life. When I was a young girl, I heard about the magnificent thoroughbred race horses at Churchill Downs. Years later I worked for the Louisville newspaper and the entire staff photographed the race. I was on the track, in the infield and box seats because we were all assigned a particular spot to shoot from with every vantage point imaginable. The photos here were taken for a story I photographed on thoroughbred horses for a National Geographic magazine. I loved going to the farms and being close to the horses and seeing everything behind the scenes that all leads up to Race Day. Every spring when I can not go to Kentucky, I always find a place to watch. One year when I had just moved, I had no tv and I ended up going to an electronics department in a local department store to watch the Derby on 27 different screens. So if you are lucky enough to be there for the Derby this year, put a couple of dollars down on Justify, Audible or Bolt d’Oro-although I’m warning you I rarely pick the winner.
