#LiveLikeARockefeller: This 3,400-year-old limestone portrait is intertwined with the Rockefeller family’s deep love of Egypt and its antiquities.

The limestone relief was first purchased by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, David’s mother, in 1929. She and her husband were long-standing supporters of Egyptian archaeologists, excavations and preservation. In 1938, they helped found the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem, which is still open today.

David purchased the relief from his brother’s estate in 1974, and gave it pride of place on his desk in the study.

‘David waited all those years to gets his hands on this relief, but ultimately he knew he was just its custodian,’ says G. Max Bernheimer, our International Head of Antiquities. ‘He would have been excited to pass it on to a new generation.’
