The work exemplifies Gauguin’s new primitive style, most notably in the brilliantly coloured vermilion beach and almost prismatic hues of the waves.⠀

Peggy and David Rockefeller acquired ‘La Vague’ at auction in 1966, and hung it in the library of their Manhattan townhouse. It has only been exhibited twice since 1966.
