The rubber ball was invented around 1600 BC when ancient Mesoamericans ingeniously figured out how to make rubber by extracting latex from rubber trees, mixing it with juice from the morning glory plant, and heating it over a fire. Ulama, the world’s first ballgame, and arguably oldest sport arose from this discovery. Today, there are less than 100 people on earth who can play this traditional ballgame. Some of them live in Sinaloa, Mexico where I filmed them making a rubber and playing ulama with a traditional handmade ball that weighed about 10 pounds. I was happy to make it through the game without being hit and in awe at the sheer athleticism required to play this ancient and beautiful sport.
