Photos by @joannapinneo // One of the most treacherous of the ancient trading routes is the Darb el-Arbein, the 'Forty Days Road, so named because of the length of time it took to travel from Darfur province in western Sudan to southern Egypt. Sudan exports about 150,000 camels to Egypt a year the majority as “cattle,” an inexpensive source of protein.; at this very moment dozens of daboukas, or camel caravans, are heading towards the border on a system of trails called the Darb el Arbain, or Forty Days Road. Like tributaries of a great river, these desert trails from all over Sudan feed into the main branch that flows north as it has since ancient times. Camels have traveled these desert trails for centuries as the bearers of goods to Egypt, but in the past, it was a 2-way journey for most of the camels. As modern transportation arrived, the camel no longer carried these goods. With the population of Egypt growing the demand for affordable meat boosted the camel trade, and these routes were revived. So today the camel is both the caravan and the cargo. Sudan is the 2nd largest importer of camels into Egypt, first is Somalia. #desert #sudan #camel #sahara
