Courtship pose, Endangered Blue-headed Quail-dove, Zapata Peninsula, Cuba // Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – I was lucky to be in Cuba at the beginning of the breeding season, when birds are shopping around for mates and nest sites. Such times offer a chance to encounter behavior not seen the rest of the year. That was the case with this beautiful Quail-dove, which performs this unusual bowing display only at the beginning of the mating season, lowering its striking blue head to the ground while lifting it’s tail into the air. What exactly this pose suggests, or whether it is being done only by males to impress females, I don’t know. I do know that it was brief, unpredictable and lovely - but I got only this one picture after a week of trying. #wildcuba #endangeredbirds @biographic_magazine #endangeredspecies
