Much of the Central Sahara is underlain by an enormous fresh water aquifer, and it pokes out of the ground to form a few permanent lakes in the far north of Chad. This one, called Ounianga Serir, is saltier than sea water due to extreme evaporation. But you can drink fresh water out of your footsteps if you walk along its sandy shore. That spring water fell as rain over 5,000 years ago when the African climate was much wetter than it is today.
