A wild #elephant herd passes through an area called #Loijuk south east of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), Africa's very first community owned and operated elephant sanctuary. The sanctuary raises calves near where they were rescued so that they might eventually be able to return to the same herd they were separated from. What’s happening there, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way the Samburu relate to wild animals they once feared. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.
