Photo by @katieorlinsky (Katie Orlinsky) // Brought to you by @ザ・ノースフェイス #SheMovesMountains // Michelle Duennes processes bee specimen data on the go while looking for the rare “bombus polaris” in the Brooks Range of Alaska. I spent a week driving 1,000 miles down the dusty roads of the Dalton highway, hiking through wet tundra and going to battle with the largest mosquitos I have ever seen with a team of scientists and Michelle, whose hilarious sense of humor and joyful spirit made every moment of the trip a blast. Michelle has a passion for bumble bees (and roller derby, where she is known as the “The PollyNator.”) As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Dr. Hollis Woodard at the University of California, Riverside, Duennes studies the evolution and conservation of bumble bees in order to discover how the species might react to changing natural and agricultural landscapes; important research that could provide clues to address climate change for other types of insects and animals. In August 2018 she will be the newest Assistant Professor of Biology at Saint Vincent College. // Join @ザ・ノースフェイス in canvasing the world with stories of female explorers.
