Lida Abdul’s films, videos, and installations address themes of cultural identity, migration, and the destruction and displacement that have marked the history of Afghanistan. “In Transit” (2008) shows a group of children attempting to use cotton balls to repair a bombed-out Soviet warplane on the outskirts of Kabul. A haunting portrayal of the aftermath of war, this work examines children’s boundless optimism amidst national trauma. See this work on view in “But a Storm Is Blowing from Paradise” opening at @GAM_Milano on April 11, as part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative.
