One of Turkey’s most outspoken and celebrated artists, Gülsün Karamustafa examines the complexities of gender, globalization, and migration. Her work “Create Your Own Story with the Given Material” (1997) is a meditation on the plight of immigrant children in Turkey and features child-sized white cotton shirts that have been sewn shut with black cord. See this work on view in “But a Storm Is Blowing from Paradise” opening at @GAM_Milano on April 11, as part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative.
