In Sweden’s preschools, boys learn to dance and girls learn to yell. Science may still be divided over whether gender differences are rooted in biology or culture, but many of Sweden’s government-funded preschools are doing what they can to deconstruct them. It’s normal for teachers to avoid referring to their students’ gender — instead of “boys and girls,” they say “friends,” or call children by name. The state curriculum urges teachers to “counteract traditional gender roles.” At one school, girls are encouraged to shout “No!” and boys run the play kitchen. @andreabruce took this photo of one of the students at the Bönan preschool is Gavle, Sweden, drawing a self-portrait.
