While on assignment for @nytmag, the photographer @andrea_frazzetta and the writer Helen McDonald accompanied the explorer Nathalie Cabrol on a 26-day expedition to Chile’s high-altitude deserts. Nathalie is an explorer, an astrobiologist and a planetary geologist. Her job: searching the Earth for secrets of life on Mars. The group was in Salar de Pajonales in Chile when @andrea_frazzetta took this photo of the #nightsky. Nathalie had visited the site briefly 5 years before their trip; she was thrilled to return and discover what it held. While there, the group slept in an abandoned mining camp. It was minus 0.4 degrees outside. “Above me,” Helen writes, “the Southern Hemisphere stars were all dust and terror and distance and slow fire in the night, and I stared up, frozen, and frozen in wonderment.” This story is 1 of 4 extraordinary journeys published in the magazine's #Voyages issue.
