These large rubbish dumps may produce contrasting impacts on wildlife and ecosystems. In white storks (Ciconia ciconia), breeding success, egg size- hatching mass and clutch size are significantly higher in pairs near rubbish dumps. And the food resources from dumps have facilitated the establishment of resident populations in Europe.

On the contrary, decreased survival rates can be due to adverse effects after waste ingestion. Plastic ingestion by white storks has been observed and these dumps are the most important sources of toxic metals found in blood samples of chicks close to the landfills.

While it’s necessary to focus on studying these impacts to adequately establish conservation and waste management practices, we can all contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle #thetimeisnow #notimetowaste.
