Serene in expression and unconventional in iconography, this Exceptional and Rare Limestone Relief Carving of an Apsara from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 A.D.) deserves a close look. The third-quarter profile is stylistic of Northern Wei stone carvings, but there are few comparable of this quality; apsaras – angel-like female figures – are often shown flying around Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, but the present example is grounded. To learn more about the Buddhist sculptures to be offered from the Jingyatang Collection, be sure to visit our #NYC galleries this weekend. The #SothebysAsianArt auction takes place on 20 March. #AsiaWeekNY ?: @juliancassady
