Wilma Rudolph (1940-1994) Rudolph was the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in Track and field in the same one Olympics. Born a sickly child who often had to wear a leg brace, Rudolph overcame her disabilities to compete in the 1956 Summer Olympics.
