Women's month celebrations continue. Can you imagine being told you couldnt play an insturment? Well both of of these trailblazers musicians were told that and persisted and became world reknown players.

Milo Castro Zalddariaga, b. 1922, Cuba. Drummer. Milo wanted to be a drummer at a very early age. It was just not done! Girls did not play drums in Cuba. So she used to mimic the sounds of the sea and the trees dancing with whatever was around her, furniture, laundry. Her family finally relented. She mastered the timbales, conga and bongos while still in single digits. By the age of 10 she had formed Anacaona, Cuba’s first ever all girl band. And that was just the start. She went on to play drums professionally her entire life. It was her determination that broke the island’s taboo against female drummers.

Melba Liston 1/13/26 - 4/23/99, Kansas City, USA - Trombonist. Self taught. Two years after picking up the instrument she was playing regularly for local radio stations. She went on to become a touring musician, touring with trumpet player Gerald Wilson and later touring the world with Billie Holliday. She released a solo cd, Melba and her 'Bones in 1959. An incredible musician. #womensmonth #celebrateoursisters #internationalwomensday
