Yuki Terase (@yuki_terase), our Head of Contemporary Art, Asia spent the afternoon with us in the gallery to appreciate Liu Wei’s ‘Revolutionary Family Series: Time Travel’. Monumental and majestic, bizarrely provocative and resplendent in saturated exuberant hues, this 1993 work is the second largest masterwork from Liu Wei’s most celebrated Revolutionary Family series to appear at auction – the only larger painting being the auction record-holding triptych executed in the following year. This arresting masterpiece, featuring Liu Wei’s father and mother astride two stallions, was inspired by a historical photo of Premier Zhou Enlai, the first premier of the People’s Republic of China. This work is a highlight of our upcoming Contemporary Art Evening Sale (31 March, #HongKong). #SothebysContemporary
