#WOMENSDAY. Today we celebrate the strength of women. Meet Rafaela Silva. Born and raised in Brazil’s most famous favela “Cidade de Deus,” Silva became interested in judo as a child. Her parents enrolled her in the Instituto Reação, a group started by Olympic bronze medallist Flávio Canto to keep kids away from the violence and crime prominent in her community. After a disqualification from London 2012 due to an illegal hold, Silva suffered racist abuse online and fell into a depression that almost made her quit the sport. But the countless messages of support spoke louder. The judoka continued training and qualified for Rio 2016. With the home advantage, she won Brazil’s first gold of the Games and now gives back by volunteering with the group that gave her her start. #IWD2018 #WomensDay
