A recent rediscovery, Warhol's #Mao from 1973 hasn't been seen for five decades. The painting is believed to have been acquired straight from The Factory by the artist's Academy Award-winning friend the Italian film art director Ferdinando Scarfiotti. Given that #Warhol’s four year hiatus from painting was spent principally in film production, it is beautifully fitting that the present work ended up in his hands. Scarfiotti was behind films including The Last Emperor, Death in Venice, American Gigolo and Scarface. The painting is on view in our London galleries now ahead of the Contemporary Art Day Sale on 8 March. #SothebysContemporary
