A dramatic spectacle at the bullfighting arena, Pablo Picasso’s ‘Scène de tauromachie’ is a highlight of our Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper auction on 28 February in London.

The work depicts a suspenseful moment between a bull on the brink of charge and a Picador with his lance raised to strike.

For Picasso, the bull was a frequently used motif to suggest masculine strength and primal, sometimes brutish, force. The artist often embodied himself as the Minotaur – half man, half bull – to represent a split between the rational and the carnal mind.
