Split-level or over/under photographs are my favorite way to introduce people who have never put on a mask and snorkel to the ocean realm. By including a familiar subject like a boat, a mountain, palm tree etc... in the above water portion of the image, it is often easier to relate to the alien looking underwater scene. Here a Kenyan fishermen paddles his dhow across a shallow coral reef flat to access deeper water. To make this type of image the upper half of the glass dome port that protects the lens from the corrosive seawater needs to be above the ocean surface, while the lower half needs to be underwater. To make a split level image stand out it is critical to have interesting subjects or patterns in both hemispheres of the photograph. #underwaterphotography #ocean #diving #underwater #coral @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative
