She and her friend Tonia were running @browntourage, an online zine, and the way they saw fashion reminded me how powerful it could be. How it can let us communicate solidarity, joy, strength, defiance, heritage. How it is profoundly public and equally intimate, a reminder in the digital era that we are also breathing bodies, muscle, skin, curves, bones. How showing up to a high fashion set and thinking you know fashion is like going to the MET or MoMa and imagining you've seen all the important art, when the reality is that the gatekeepers have been a few mostly wealthy white men, and there is much more beyond the walls than within them. So when @Vogue España reached out, I immediately called Hawa and asked her to art direct, and with the support of @etorriente and my brilliant agent @x_tran, we created a portfolio driven entirely by women — from the set designer, to digital techs, producer, photographers, stylist, hair, make-up, cinematographer, even the designers I wore. I am so proud of this story, the creative teams, and that we are published in Vogue. As Hawa says, “we are renovating our industry from the inside out." This issue was also particularly special because I got to take pictures with my family. And at the end of the day, maybe that is the most radical component of modeling for it: I got to be my full self because I got to be part of a larger whole, in front of, and behind, the camera. #voguemarzo
