To be celebrated by friends and colleagues is an amazing honor. When @inezandvinoodh & @alastairmckimm told me all the young models who mentioned my name as a role model I felt so emotional. It's hard to find the words to explain why. Maybe it's because our value as models is at once entirely superficial, but also requires real work and creative collaboration that often only folks on set get to see. There is something so special and unique about the vulnerability and intimacy of being a body (and not a voice) in front of the camera. And finding a way to appreciate that moment, as well as find a voice outside of that moment is challenging. The balancing act has taught me about what power is, what collaboration is, and has given me the opportunity to expand and grow beyond who I thought I could be. For all the issues that arise when an industry centers youth, superficial beauty, sexuality, and femininity in a culture that is still sexist and racist, it is the moments where we get to be all of these conflicting things at once -- outspoken, strange, sensual, androgynous, feminine, strong, vulnerable, quiet -- and be respected, that help illuminate the way forward.
