Painted at a time of personal turmoil and financial hardship, ‘Vétheuil’ by Claude Monet exemplifies a period of extraordinary productivity for the artist as he forged a new direction in his art.
.
In 1878, a year before he created this work, Monet moved his family from Paris to Vétheuil, a small rural village by the river Seine.
.
He immediately began to paint his new surroundings and, much to his relief, he was able to sell many of these initial landscapes. Gradually, he abandoned his earlier interest in industrialisation and modernity for the rural scenes around his home.
.
Claude Monet (1840–1926), ‘Vétheuil’, 1879. Oil on canvas, 25 ¾ x 36 ⅜ in. (65.5 x 92.2 cm.). Estimate: £4,000,000–6,000,000.
.
Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale – 27 February at Christie’s in London.
