Following its unveiling at the 1956 @labiennale, Ville Provençale, which was hidden from public view for years, comes to light as one of the greatest and largest works by Indian artist Sayed Haider #Raza created during the 1950s – an incredibly formative period for the artist. Distinguished by its vivid colours, this seminal work which captures a semi-abstracted view of a town in rural Provence, presents a unique melding of the artist’s deep rooted Indian heritage with the post-war modernism that was blossoming in the French art scene at the time. From its illustrious beginnings when painted under the patronage of renowned gallerist Lara Vincy to its exhibition history at the #VeniceBiennale, Ville Provençale stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of the foremost pioneers of Indian Modern Art. The work will be offered as a star lot of our Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art sale in #NewYork on 19 March 2018 as part of #AsiaWeek.
